Of bat wings, arachnids and tentacles

This morning, of All Hallow's Eve, Le Divan Fumoir Bohémien reminds [info]prosperous_fox of her favorite opera, Der Federmaus, because who could not love an opera about dressing up as a bat? [The image is
Fliegende Blätter 1892 l'abbé Spallanzani]. In fact, I think I must make this costume. It is too awesome not to be in my closet. It reminds me of Les Vampires. That is my other great costume plan; Irma Vep (think: anagram), but the original Louis Feuillade version.

Alternatively, there is always Ray Caesar's version of the bat-woman:

though the spiderwoman and squidwoman appears rather ambious:

Yes, 'tis true. But to be honest, it's all about the plot and the costumes. [info]prosperous_fox is more of a visual that aural type individual, though the music is sweet. In the absence of any good foxy operas I have chosen one about 'the flying mouse' which is known in other cultures, ahem, as a 'flying fox'. I've always wanted wings you know, especially bat-wings.

I don't see how a bat can be termed a 'flying fox' - maybe I lack imagination that way.

*sigh* this post made me miss Flapius. he was cute.

See, for instance, the wikipedia entry on MEGABATS!
"The large flying foxes are 40 cm (16 inches) long and have a wingspan of 150 cm (5 feet). These giants can exceed 1 kg (2.2 pounds) in weight. "

"Because of their large size and somewhat "spectral" appearance, megabats are sometimes used in horror movies to represent vampires or to lend an aura of spookiness. In reality, as noted, the bats of this group are frugivorous and not dangerous to human beings."

I've always wanted to build a bat box.
